The Most Beautiful Cars Ever Made: Icons of Style and Design

Reading Time: 5 minutes

In the past, car designs mainly focused on aerodynamics to help them move smoothly. But cars have come a long way over time- not just in performance but also in looks. Today, many nice cars are considered works of art, known for their stunning design. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But when it comes to the most beautiful cars of all time, car lovers and design experts tend to agree on many of the top choices.

Some cars completely changed the way people think about car design when they were first revealed. Even today, they still leave car fans in awe. Others may not be as bold but still stand out by doing classic design better than anyone else. Thanks to their timeless look and appeal, many of these cars have become highly valuable and are now prized by collectors as rare pieces of automotive art.

Luxury and beauty often go together, and this list highlights both. It includes not only classic cars with timeless charm but also modern ones with sleek, stylish designs. Let us take a closer look at these cars and see what makes each of them special and unique.

Ford Mustang Fastback (1964-1973)

The Plymouth Barracuda may have launched just before the Ford Mustang in 1964, but it was the Mustang’s sporty fastback design that truly started the pony car trend. It quickly became a favorite in the U.S., selling a million units in just two years. Iconic versions like the Mach 1, Shelby and Bullitt 390 GT helped cement its status. The Mustang’s bold design has inspired sports coupes worldwide ever since and remains one of the coolest looking cars in the world.

Lamborghini Countach (1974-1990)

It is amazing that Lamborghini built the sharp, mid-engine Countach for over 15 years. Designed by Marcello Gandini of Bertone, who also created the Miura, it was first shown as a prototype in 1971.

The production version came with a powerful 370-hp V12 engine and was improved for better aerodynamics, cooling, stability and safety. Over time, it was updated, with the final 25th Anniversary Edition making 449 horsepower. The Countach remains one of the most beautiful cars ever made and continues to inspire cool car designs.

Birkin Blower Bentley (1927-1931)

The Bentley Blower No. 1 was a supercharged race car created by Sir Tim Birkin, with help from engineer Amherst Villiers, after W.O. Bentley refused to add a supercharger to his 4.5-liter model. Birkin’s success convinced Bentley to build 50 cars to qualify for Le Mans.

His original single-seater set a 137.96 mph record at Brooklands. In 2012, it sold for over £5 million, and Bentley recently announced a limited run of new ‘continuation’ Blower models honoring this classic- one of the world’s most beautiful cars from the early racing era.

Ferrari 250 GTO (1962-1964)

Ferrari made 36 units of the 250 GTO between 1962 and 1964 to meet FIA racing rules. The name comes from its 12-cylinder engine, each cylinder is 250cc and “GTO” means “Grand Touring Homologated” in Italian.

Most (33) had the original Serial  I body, while three years later models featured a sleeker Series II design, similar to the 250 LM. In 1964, four of the Series I cars were also updated with the newer Series II body style. This model remains one of the best looking cars in the world and one of the most sought-after collector’s cars ever.

Alfa Romeo Montreal (1970-1977)

Marcello Gandini, fresh off designing the Lamborghini Miura, created the Alfa Romeo Montreal concept in 1967. Shown at Expo 67, it later debuted as a production car at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show.

It featured a 2.6-liter V8 based on the T33 Stradale and shared parts with the Alfa Giulia GTV. Though stylish and powerful, its high price and lack of U.S. approval hurt sales. Fewer than 4,000 units were made, which makes it a rare and unique classic, and one of the prettiest cars ever produced.

Bugatti Type 57 S/SC Atlantic Coupé (1936–1938)

Between 1934 and 1940, Bugatti built 710 Type 57 touring cars powered by a 135-hp 3.3-liter engine from its Grand Prix cars. The Type 57 came in two main versions: the standard model and the lower Type 57 S, with some fitted with superchargers (SC), which boost power to 200 hp.

Only 43 S models and two SCs were originally made. Bugatti also created four rare Atlantic coupes- three are known today, but the one owned by Jean Bugatti is still missing. The Atlantic remains one of the world’s best looking cars and a legendary symbol of automotive elegance.

Porsche 917 (1968-1971)

The Porsche 917 is one of the brand’s most famous race cars, introduced in 1969. It won the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1970 and 1971 after fixing early aerodynamic problems. Powered by a flat-twelve engine made from two six-cylinder engines, it featured a special gas-filled tubular chassis that warned the driver if damaged.

Out of 59 cars made, three were modified for road use, including the well-known Martini race car. The 917 is loved for both its look and performance and is one of the coolest car designs in racing history.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL (1954-1957)

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL, inspired by the 1952 W194 racer, was made as a gullwing coupe, from 1954 to 1957 and a roadster from 1957 to 1963.

It has a powerful 240-hp 3.0-liter inline-six engine with direct fuel injection and was the fastest car of its time. U.S. importer Max Hoffman convinced Mercedes to build it and launched it in New York in 1954 to attract American buyers. The “SL” means “Super-light,” thanks to its lightweight frame. The 300SL is truly one of the world’s most beautiful cars ever made.

BMW i8 (2014-2020)

Before the BMW i8, most hybrid and alternative cars were practical but not exciting. Introduced in 2014, the i8 brought a futuristic, sci-fi look inspired by BMW’s 1978 M1 supercar.

The roadster version came in 2018, following a 2012 concept reveal. This two-seat convertible features butterfly doors and unique headrest fairings, which makes it even more eye-catching. This i8 proved that the future of cars can be exciting and beautiful, showing off some of the coolest looking cars in the world.

Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Split- Window Coupe (1963)

The 1963 Corvette stunned everyone with its futuristic look. Willian L. Mitchell, soon to be GM’s styling VP, was inspired by cars from the Turin Auto Show, especially the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante. He wanted the first Corvette coupe to have a similar design.

Younger designer Peter Brock’s idea won the competition, which led to the Corvette Stingray race car of the late 1950s. This design was refined by Larry Shinoda and Tony Lapin in GM’s secret Studio X, becoming the iconic ’63 Corvette- one of the most beautiful cars ever seen on the road and one of the best looking cars in the world.
