2025 Electric Car Grant Explained: Is It Worth Making the Move?

The UK government says it wants more people behind the wheel of electric cars, and it’s putting £650 million on the table to make that happen. But this isn’t a rebate you apply for or a cheque in the mail. It’s a manufacturer-led discount that’s tied to strict conditions, and the list of eligible cars doesn’t exist as of now. If you’re comparing Volvo specs to other eligible EVs, hold tight. None have been approved yet.

What the grant actually does

If a manufacturer gets approval from the Department for Transport, they can apply a discount of up to £3,750 to the purchase price of a new electric vehicle. But there are strings attached. The EV must:

• Cost under £37,000 (list price only, extras don’t count)
• Be brand new or pre-registered with zero previous owners.
• Emit 0g CO₂/km
• Hit at least 100 miles of WLTP-certified range.
• Come with a 3-year (or 60,000-mile) vehicle warranty and an 8-year (or 100,000-mile) battery warranty.
• The manufacturer must have a valid Science-Based Target (SBT) for emissions reductions.

Without that last one, even a fully compliant car gets shut out.

When do the discounts kick in?

Not yet. Everything hinges on how fast carmakers submit their applications and how quickly those are processed by the Department for Transport and the Vehicle Certification Agency. Once a model is approved, the grant shows up instantly as a discount at the dealership. You don’t have to fill out anything.

How long is this grant actually available?

Technically, until 31 March 2029 or until the £650 million runs dry. But the government has built in an escape clause: it can change or pull the scheme at any time, without warning. That makes this more of a “use it while you can” policy than a locked-in guarantee.

So, is it worth waiting for?

If you’re planning to buy an EV in the next year, then yes, this grant could save you thousands. But don’t assume every model will qualify. And if you’re eyeing something above £37,000, the discount won’t apply at all.
